King Family Vacation

After camping with family over the Memorial Day Weekend, we planned to continue camping for several days. Our plans changed when the weather looked as if it may rain for several of those days. In last minute decision, we took PopPop up on his offer and headed to Md. We were already half way there and there was lots of things to do close by. It turned out to be a great choice.
On Tuesday, we took the boys to Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. We decided to take the metro instead of dealing with the traffic. We even took a small detour, stopping for lunch at the Chinatown metro stop. We found a great little Chinese place after exiting the station. There was a nice chinese lady making dumplings in the window and we decided it was a good choice. The boys love Chinese food.

At the Natural History Museum, we headed for the dinosuars. Brett was very interested in the fossils. It was great to see them on a large scale. The T-Rex was very exciting. Breandan was little confused why the other animals weren't moving in the displays. He didn't understand why the zebra was just standing there in the Africa display. I quess he was expecting the zoo.

We had a great time exploring the Butterfly room. It is this great room with over 300 live Butterflies flying around. I think the boys could have stay in the room (which was 95 degrees and very humid) for over an hour. They were intent having the butterflies land on them. Brett must taste better to butterflies then Breandan, he was more succesful at having the butterflies land on him. We kept telling Breandan he had to be quiet and still (which for Breandan is very difficult). At one point, he had butterfly land on his head and Brett rushed over to give him a congratatorly hug. Breandan didn't believe though because he couldn't see it. Finally, a nice staff worker helped by placing a butterfly on Breandan hand.

We also saw the new Night at the Museum-Battle of the Smithsonian movie on the IMAX screen. It was great to see it at the actual movie. It espically fun to see things we had seen earlier in the day and to show Brett the Smithsonian Castle, which was key location in the movie. Of course, the big hit of the movie for the boys was the screen with Darth Vader and Oscar.
On Wednesday, we surprised Mimi with a visit. We were very excited to see her new apartment. We are happy she lives so close to MomMom now. Brett and Breandan had lots of fun playing with gracie's toys.
After visiting Mimi, we took the boys to see their first Oriole game. MomMom even took a day off work to go with us. It was a great game. Breandan asked about meeting the mascot, the Oriole Bird. Amazingly, we ran into the Bird before we even found our seats. We sat in the All You Can Eat Seats and ate lots of hot dogs, learned how to eat peanuts from the shell, drank soda, ate popcorn and nachos, and some italian ice. The game went into extra innings and saw the Orioles win with a big 3 run home run in the battle of the 12th. I hope this was the first of many Oriole games for us.

Memorial Day Camping 2009

We went camping with Mommom, PopPop, Uncle Phil and Megan for Memorial Day weekend. Everyone meet at the Small County Campground, in Lousia, Va on Sat. The weekend went by very quickly. It was great to go camping this weekend. As a child, I have fond memories of camping every Memorial Day and Labor with Uncle Randy, Aunt Joyce, Carrie and Emily.

Poppop had organized out menu and had some new campfire cooking ideas. We loved the buns with honey butter on the fire. We had steak cook like they do in South Africa. We were thinking about Aunt Amanda and Uncle Jacques.

The boys loved going to the pool. Breandan has found new confidence in his swim vest. Megan and Phil have been swimming a lot with Breandan (at each trip we've taken) and they were impressed with his new ability. They are going to love the pool this summer.

The weather held out and we were able to enjoy a great weekend. It wasn't too hot and the thunder showers that threatened never arrived. We were very thankful.

We look forward to going again next year. We will make our plans earlier so maybe we can find a campground that the bathroom isn't up hill...

Ps- If you click on the picture it will give the picture's description and title. There's a great story about most of pictures.

Sleeping Big Boy

A couple of weeks ago, we had very busy day. Breandan missed his afternoon nap because he was hanging out with Brett and his two friends from preschool. By dinner time Breandan was exhausted...There's still something special about a sleeping baby / big boy.

Our New Puppy

We adopted Red Rose Bud King a couple of weeks ago. When we went to pick her up, I asked the boys what we should name her. Brett suggested Rose Bud, from a dog in the Disney Buddy Dog series of movies. Seane preferred Red- so she became Red Rose Bud King. She learning to come to Red and Rose. She is another basset hound with big long ears. Pepper and Daisy have welcomed her into the family.

Mudcats Game

On Saturday, we took the boys to their first Mudcats game. The Mudcats are a double AA minor league team. Their stadium is about half way between our house and where Seane is working right now, so we were able to met him after work.

The boys were looking forward to meeting Muddy- the catfish mascot. They no longer have any fear of these dressed characters. When Brett did meet Muddy- he asked if he was real. Muddy responded by shaking his head. Then Brett, always thinking, asked Muddy why he doesn't talk. Muddy's handler responded by telling Brett it is because catfish don't talk. He was satisfied with that answer.

We did face an 1 hour and 30 minute rain delay. We watched as the grounds crew struggled to put on the trap in the 40mph winds. Even Muddy got in on the action. I tried to talk to Brett about watching them work as team to get the trap to stay down. We also killed some time eating- chicken fingers, fries, and some dip and dots ice cream.

Next, Breandan wants to go back on a Fireworks night. We didn't leave till almost 11- both boys stayed awake the entire time. The game went into extra innings and although we lost the game- everyone had a great time.

star wars-- May the Force Be With You

The Stars Wars bug has recently bit our household. We've been watching a lot of the Star Wars the Clone Wars- it is a cartoon with some of the movie characters. (sorry for the bad picture- i took it with my phone).

They boys and Seane have light sabers-- it is really fun to see them all play with each other. It is normally the boys against Seane.

MomMom and PopPop gave the boys Star Wars shirts and underwear. It has been hard to get them off and in the wash.

Here's a drawing Brett did of Anakin Skywalker. Notice his light saber. Brett has the Anakin light saber, which is of course blue.
